HCD Gives Gold to Our Cardiac Catheterization Prep and Recovery Renovation

Our work on the Cardiac Catheterization Prep and Recovery spaces at TriHealth’s Bethesda North Hospital was recognized with a Gold Award from Healthcare Design Magazine in the Remodel/Renovation Category.

Making the journey to health and well-being more accessible starts with empowering patients with the ability to navigate to their appointments and feel supported and uplifted along the way. Positive patient outcomes also rely on staff’s ability to collaborate and communicate in ways that best benefit the patient.

During the design process, the staff helped create patient avatars to understand how to support different patient needs. These avatars helped surface improvements including easier wayfinding, a more comfortable waiting area, right-sized treatment bays, and a more expansive staff work area. Access to daylight, use of LED light, biophilic forms (such as the soft curves of the registration desk and light installations), and warm, wood-like materials help uplift patients and staff. Environmental graphic wall treatments throughout the space were inspired by the delicate mesh pattern of tiny heart stents.

The jury loved how calm, modern, and streamlined the renovated space feels. This juror’s comment sums up their appreciation for our work: “Graphics, wayfinding, and lighting are cohesive with the overall design and make a huge impact in a warm and welcoming experience. The design team absolutely met the goal of improved access, family support, and features for increased staff collaboration and retention. The team’s incorporation of the mesh pattern of heart stents shows a level of respect and understanding of what actually happens in that space. Bravo!”

Many thanks to the Healthcare Design Magazine jury for the accolades and to our engineering consultants, Heapy (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Technology) and Schaefer (Structural).
