GBBN’s Healthcare Symposium Focuses on Tackling Healthcare Provider Burnout
GBBN recently hosted a virtual symposium, Caring for Healthcare Providers: Tackling Burnout.
The symposium convened two panels of multidisciplinary experts in research, nursing, pediatric clinical services, and design to explore systemic causes for staff burnout and interventions that can help address them.
The panels featured in-depth conversations on operational, environmental, and societal issues impacting the well-being of healthcare providers. They also highlighted effective strategies being adopted by leading health organizations as well as opportunities to better support our healthcare workforce.
“Burnout arises from a complex system of interconnected issues, including post-COVID workforce shortages, emotional exhaustion, and feelings that the workplace has become depersonalized” says GBBN Associate and Director of Research, Shan Jiang, who moderated the first panel, ‘Systemic Issues in Work Stress Among Healthcare Professionals.’ “As our panelists made clear, it will take a multi-pronged approach to address these issues and better align the demands placed on healthcare workers with the appropriate resources.”
GBBN Associate, Kirsten Miller, moderated our second panel, ‘Environmental and Human Factors to Promote Staff Mental Health’, which explored some of the operational, cultural, and physical barriers to respite in healthcare settings. Hospital nursing staff may work 12-hour, 16-hour, or back-to-back shifts with breaks used for eating or making phone calls home. Leaving the unit can be hard and if there are respite spaces in the hospital, they may be located too far away from patients. “Our panelists highlighted many interventions to their physical spaces that could help bring respite,” explains Kirsten. “The ability to access a walking path or have a view outside have a positive impact on staff well-being, as does dedicated space for team debriefs after challenging events.”
According to GBBN Principal and Director of Healthcare, Michael Lied, bringing different perspectives—including administrative, research, and staffing expertise—is critical. “At GBBN, we understand that bringing diverse lenses to problem solving helps surface innovative solutions. The call to action from this symposium is to continue collaborating to address an issue that impacts every healthcare professional.”
