Michigan State University’s (MSU) main library serves over 50,000 students on its East Lansing campus. We were engaged for a recent study centered on eliminating underused collections and enhancing the undergraduate experience. The study highlighted ways the building could support student engagement and persistence by making it easier for them to explore new technologies, develop new passions, connect to peers, and leverage the expertise of library staff.
The study surfaced two key elements to help MSU achieve these goals:
First, an atrium was conceived to join the library’s east and west wings. This space would also support student success by establishing a hub where they can access integrated library services like makerspaces, Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality studios, and digital media suites. Interior ramps help connect the two buildings while addressing their different floor to floor heights. The ramps allow people to travel between the two buildings without having to go outside during harsh Michigan winters.

Second, a proposed plaza makes the approach to the buildings more accessible and welcoming and creates pockets for outdoor learning. The entry canopy and vestibule help make the entry clear and provide protection during bad weather.
Done concurrently with a programming exercise led by Buro Happold, we were able to help MSU stakeholders visualize the potential synergies of different library programs and how the building can better engage their campus community.
