Preparing to Welcome Patients: TriHealth Cuts Ribbon on Thomas Center

Joined by major donors and local officials, TriHealth administrators and staff recently celebrated a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Harold M. and Eugenia S. Thomas Comprehensive Care Center.

The Thomas Center reimagines cancer and cardiac care in the region by putting the patient at the center of a multi-disciplinary treatment and support universe. Rather than sending patients between different campus locations, it brings everything they need from different specialists to an array of ancillary support services (genetic counselling, nutritionists, financial advisors) into one place.

A central atrium provides ample natural light and easy wayfinding while weaving natural elements—a 50 ft. living wall and views of the landscape—throughout.

According to GBBN medical planner, Angela Mazzi, the atrium, which includes a café, is part of an effort to provide spaces for socializing and community-building within the Thomas Center. “Patients will likely have some downtime between appointments, community spaces like the atrium are meant to help people find each other and mutual support, so they know they’re not in this alone.”

Enthusiasm for the design was apparent throughout the ceremony. Looking around the atrium, Montgomery Mayor, Chris Dobrozsi said, “Talk about architecture matters (design matters)…I cannot think of a more welcoming and well-designed facility than the one we’re standing in today.”
