(DIS) 2025: Save the Date for Joy!

Every year, GBBN undertakes its Design Issues Series (DIS), an open-ended experiment that seeks to deepen the community’s connection to design and the built environment. This year’s DIS, JOY explored this emotion. What is joy? How does it spark and spread?

From the outside, our individual joys may not appear to link directly to architecture or design. It is through exploring and sharing our interests—and the interests of our clients, communities, and collaborators—that we can uncover a more meaningful project process.

A series of curated activities in our US offices brought different groups of GBBNers together to share ideas and build relationships through playful making and building, weaving, improv presenting, field trips, and photography.

Our DIS exhibit on JOY will document these activities through displays and stories and will invite the community to participate through games and crafts. The exhibit will also provide a glimpse into some of the ways we incorporate Artificial Intelligence into our creative process.

The technical mastery and creative tenacity of delivering an architecture or interior design project is, of course, our professional charge. However, the personal curiosities, creativity, wonder, and investigations—the joys—we bring to our work are key ingredients that make a project something special for those who encounter it. We look forward to sharing our individual and collaborative joys through this year’s DIS exhibit.
