Cincinnati Children’s Critical Care Building Raises Final Beam

Bearing hundreds of signatures from patients, parents, doctors, nurses, designers, and contractors the final beam was raised and installed for the new Critical Care Building (CCB) at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

Installation of the final beam is a significant moment in any project. It’s the last structural piece needed to get the roof of the building completed, which will allow interior work to start without being hampered by weather.

But CCB is also approaching another major milestone, which usually doesn’t happen so quickly after topping out: The structure will be dried in (its shell sufficiently completed to keep out weather elements) by early December 2019. After dry in, interior finishes can begin as this project rolls on toward its summer 2021 completion date.

“We spent countless hours in with ZGF, Messer Construction, trade contractors, exterior skin consultants, and engineers to figure out how to construct the exterior of the building and prefabricate components of the exterior skin in order to dry in the building faster,” says Bryan Korb, part of the GBBN design team working on the project. “We achieved this by using a unitized curtain wall system and panelized exterior back-up walls.”

GBBN’s Shawn Feigh, has been working on this project since 2016. “Cincinnati Children’s accepts patients from all 50 states and 58 countries. The CCB will house the sickest of the sick children,” says Shawn. “Knowing that design can enhance the patient and family experience, when they are going through a very rough time in their lives is really inspiring.”

GBBN (associate architect) is partnered with ZGF Architects (Design Architect) on this project.
