Two EDRA CORE Awards for GBBN

The Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) has announced the Certificate of Research Excellence (CORE) recipients for 2024. GBBN was recognized for two studies, both conducted under the leadership of our Director of Research, Dr. Shan Jiang:

We received a Merit Certification for Optimizing Hospital Arrival Experiences: An Integrated Research Protocol for Post-Occupancy Evaluation. This research collaboration between GBBN and the University of Kansas filled a significant wayfinding research gap by examining vehicular and pedestrian behaviors as people arrive and transition from outdoors to inside within a renovated hospital arrival zone. The GBBN research team included, Kirsten Miller, Zahra Daneshvar, and Jackson Feinknopf. The University of Kansas research team included Dr. Hui Cai and Dr. Monalipa Dash.

We received a CORE Certification for our study, Architecture Matters: Exploring Audiences’ Holistic Theatrical Experience through Social Media Reviews. This research, analyzing comments left on social media, suggests that beyond the performance, theater architecture and design play an important role in a patron’s overall experience. The GBBN study team includes Shan Jiang, Marcene Kinney, Christopher Yost, and Julia Clements.

EDRA CORE is a professional certification that recognizes and celebrates rigorous and innovative practice-based environmental design research studies. Through CORE, design and research practitioners explore new topics, methods, and findings with the most brilliant minds in the field. Developed to assess the value of research beyond rigor alone, EDRA CORE’s unique evaluation framework identifies practice-based environmental design research that is not only rigorous but also meets industry challenges, pushes the boundaries of practice, recognizes the importance of research in practice, and builds on EDRA’s tradition of inquiry, reflection, and collaboration.
